TRAFFIC RULES IN ALABAMA

Travelling to the Jack Link’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway is all about enjoying the racing, but knowing a few local driving rules in Alabama will help keep your journey stress-free.

Driving basics

As throughout the United States, vehicles in Alabama drive on the right-hand side of the road. If you’re used to left-hand driving, be especially cautious when leaving parking areas, joining traffic, or turning at intersections around the Superspeedway.

Speed limits

Speed limits vary by road type. Residential streets are usually limited to 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h). On state highways, limits typically range from 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h), while interstates can be posted at up to 70 mph (113 km/h). Speed enforcement is common, particularly on race weekends, and penalties for speeding can be significant.

Traffic lights and intersections

Traffic signals are closely monitored, and some areas use cameras. Turning right on a red light is generally permitted after a complete stop, unless a sign says otherwise. Always give way to pedestrians and avoid trying to “beat” a yellow light if you can stop safely.

Alcohol and driving

Drink-driving laws are strictly enforced. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and over, with a zero-tolerance policy for under-21s. Police checkpoints may be set up near the Superspeedway during race weekends. If alcohol is part of your plans, arrange a designated driver or use a taxi or rideshare.

Seat belt requirements

Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants, front and rear. Police can stop a vehicle solely for a seat belt violation, so make sure everyone is buckled up.

Right-of-way and pedestrians

Drivers must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and stop signs. At four-way stops, the first vehicle to arrive goes first; if two arrive at the same time, the driver on the right has priority. Expect increased pedestrian movement near the track and adjust your speed accordingly.

If you’re stopped by the police

If signalled to pull over, indicate and stop on the right in a safe place, preferably somewhere well-lit after dark. Keep your hands visible, remain calm and polite, and follow the officer’s instructions.
